https://peertube.designersethiques.org/videos/watch/77d32e87-5da0-40e0-9a72-13210a077557 Stand Out of Our Light: Design and Resistance in the Attention Economy James Williams In the ‘attention economy,’ digital technologies are increasingly designed to exploit our psychological vulnerabilities in order to direct us toward goals that may or may not align with our own. In the short term, this can distract us from doing the things we want to do. In the longer term, however, it can distract us from living the lives we want to live—or, even worse, it can undermine our capacities for reflection and self-regulation, making it harder, in the words of Harry Frankfurt, to ‘want what we want to want.’ As a result, deep ethical questions of self-determination and dignity lurk here—questions that to date have been either minimized or completely ignored. In this talk I will discuss how the ‘distractions’ of the attention economy, far from minor annoyances, may in fact represent the defining moral challenge of our time. Responding adequately to this challenge requires an urgent societal effort aimed at a full-scale reform of the attention economy. I will outline a vision for such an effort, giving particular attention to the unique role that designers can play in helping society resist the forces of attentional exploitation that now beleaguer us all.
